Oil Pulling for a Healthier Smile

Oil Pulling for a Healthier Smile

One year ago, my boyfriend was in an accident at work. A piece of pipe was dropped by a co-worker and when the pipe fell, it hit a 2×4 piece of wood. The wood flew up and hit him in the face, knocking his two front teeth up into his skull. By some miracle, the teeth stopped before hitting his brain. He was lucky to be alive, but the result was very messed up teeth. Since the accident, he has had a root canal in one of the front teeth and had to have the other one completely pulled. He now wears a flipper and should soon be getting a permanent replacement screwed into his jaw. His bottom two teeth were pushed back in the accident and seem to be dying, resulting in an unpleasant color. My boyfriend, Justin, is so embarrassed about his teeth. In past years he chewed tobacco for quite some time, also resulting in some coloring issues. Because Justin quit chewing and will soon be getting a permanent replacement tooth, he wants his teeth to be white and healthy looking. We read about oil pulling online and decided to give it a shot.

What is Oil Pulling?

Oil pulling is an ancient form of oral care that is done by swishing around a carrier oil such as coconut, sesame, sunflower, or olive oil, in one’s mouth for a period of time.

Benefits of Oil Pulling

Whitens teeth

Prevents cavities

Clears sinuses

Strengthens teeth, gums, and jaw

Helps clear bad breath

Relieves hangovers (Oh yes, I said hangovers. College buddies, take note)

Relieves some headaches

Helps keep skin clear

Less toxins means less headaches, clearer skin, healthier hair, better breath, and a happier you!

How Do You Oil Pull?

To oil pull, you simply scoop out a few teaspoons of your selected carrier oil and move it around in your mouth for about twenty minutes. We decided on coconut oil because it has the least taste. Because coconut oil is a solid at room temperature, melt it in your mouth before swishing it around. Many people have a hard time with this, as it can make you gag. Make sure your stomach is empty. It’s great to do it before breakfast. Once you’ve swished the oil around in your mouth for twenty minutes, spit it into a trash can. Spitting it into your sink can clog it up. When you are done, swish some salt water around in your mouth and spit it out to remove the toxins that have just been pulled by the oil. Do not swallow at any point during the oil pulling process. Oil pulling pulls out toxins from your mouth that can be very dangerous if swallowed. You may brush your teeth after, but it isn’t necessary. Do this up to three times daily, or two to three times a week until desired results appear. I recommend doing it at least a few weeks every year.

Oil Pulling with Added Essential Oils

Oil pulling can just be done with the carrier oil, but it is very beneficial to add a few drops of essential oils to your carrier oil. If you choose to do so, only use Young Living Oils. These oils are 100% therapeutic grade and can be used orally. Simply add two to three drops of the oil to your spoonful of carrier oil. Not only do these oils make it taste better, they help whiten and detoxify the mouth faster.

What Essential Oils Should I Use for Oil Pulling?

Lemon

Thieves

Grapefruit

Orange

Citrus Fresh

These oils all help fight bacteria and will help whiten your teeth faster.

We have been trying oil pulling for three days and already are loving the results. He says his gums feel fresh and tingly and his teeth aren’t hurting when he chews anymore. Each time we do this, we are noticing that his teeth are getting a little bit whiter too.

If you aren’t getting the results you want right away, don’t give up. This process takes time. Give it a few weeks!

I will post before and after pictures along the way after we do this for a week. Tune in soon to see our final results.
