Flavoring Water The Healthy Way

Many people are trying out flavored water as a healthier alternative to sodas and other carbonated beverages. Water is so important to our health! What people often fail to realize is that many flavored water options sold in stores contain fake sugars and sodium. Fake sugars have been known to lead to many health problems, such as bloating, gas, and diarrhea. Fake sugars are not good for the body, as they are chemically made and hard to break down. A healthier option is making your own flavored water at home. A great way to do that is by simply adding a few drops of essential oils to your water. I prefer Young Living oils because they are so pure. Make sure to only use one or two drops. It doesn’t seem like much, but these oils are strong.

Some awesome flavors for flavored water include:

Lemon– This is a nice, light and refreshing flavor. It tastes like fresh squeezed lemons and is a great wake-me-up for those early mornings. Not too sour, not too sweet. Also a nice addition to teas for a healthy immune system.

Lime– If you enjoy Sprite or other lemon-lime sodas, this is a great option for you. Mix it with lemon, or use it alone for a refreshing wake up. It’s a little sweeter than lemon, so use this if you are used to sugary sodas. Plus it helps boost your immune system!

Tangerine– Also a sweet addition to water, this oil is great for calming irritable nerves. Drink a glass of water mixed with a few drops of tangerine and feel your spirits lift.

Orange– This water mix smells amazing. It helps with infections, inflammation, and depression. As odd as this sounds, it is a great addition to hot cocoa and mochas. Also great with chocolate Americanos.

Citrus– This mix of orange, tangerine, mandarin, grapefruit, lemon, and spearmint is sure to help lift your spirits and build your immunity. A few drops of this makes for a sweet and refreshing drink with all your favorite flavors.

Peppermint– This is my all time favorite. I LOVE peppermint with a passion. One drop goes a long way. I first tasted this awesome concoction from my grandma. She put in one drop of peppermint in a 32 ounce cup of water. She drank it and refilled it twice and the flavor was still very strong. This is also a great additive for hot cocoa and mochas.

Spearmint– Like peppermint, this is another one that goes a long way. It’s a great, fresh tasting addition to hot cocoa and mochas as well. To me, spearmint is a more refreshing version of peppermint.

Lavender– This calming oil is awesome for night time teas. It is so calming and is sure to help you get to sleep faster at night. Drink about an hour before bed. Great with decaf chai!

It’s best to drink water flavored with essential oils out of a stainless steel or glass cup/water bottle. The oils will leach into plastic, causing any future drinks to be tainted with the flavor.
