Calm the Storm with Lavender

Calm the Storm with Lavender

It’s every mother’s dream for their children to be happy, calm beings all the time and for them to go to bed without a fuss. In a perfect world, children wouldn’t throw tantrums in the middle of the store or scream for an hour instead of napping, but we all know that those sorts of things happen every day. It’s just part of the blessing of having children. They scream, they cry, they throw fits, but we still love them.

lavender

My daughter is going through her teething stage right now and is extremely testy. She’s been throwing herself around and screaming if I try to put her down for a nap or for bedtime, no matter how tired she is. I know, how horrible of me to try to make sure she gets enough sleep. She doesn’t seem to care how good my motives are, she just is not having it.

After a few days of that fun adventure, I decided to bring out the lavender at bedtime. I really can’t stand the smell of lavender and my daughter is just a year old, so I mixed just one drop of lavender with a few pumps of her normal lotion. I undressed her and rubbed the mixture all over her cute little tummy and the rest of her tiny body. Surprisingly, she didn’t even fight me. Normally she would screech, claw, dance around, etc.

I laid down with her like normal and she was a little bit fussy, but nothing like normal. Within a few minutes of us snuggling and nursing, she was out. It cut our routine time in over half.

Normally she wakes up around 10 p.m. and I lay with her until she falls back asleep and she wakes back up around midnight and we go get her and she sleeps in our bed. This time though, she didn’t wake up until after 2:00 a.m. The lavender not only helped calm her down, it helped her sleep longer and better too.

I added a drop of lavender to my mascara because I have read that it helps lengthen and strengthen lashes. More on that in the future!

How do you calm the storm with your children? Or husbands, they count too.

Thieves: Kill That Flu Bug

Thieves: Kill That Flu Bug

sickdays

Before having my child, I rarely got sick. It happened maybe once or twice a year, but since having her, I seem to be sick at least once a month for a week at a time. Sometimes she even gets sick with me and that is beyond miserable. Mommies do not get sick days, ever. We still have to clean and make lunches and change diapers and entertain even though we’d rather be sleeping it off in bed.

Last week another one of my dreaded colds started. Both my daughter and I were stuffed up at the beginning of the day and runny nose faucets with no off switch at the end of the day. She was beyond grumpy because she was teething on top of the sickness. I had a small Young Living family party that Thursday with a member who could not be around sick people due to her job in the retirement field. I was freaking out that my cold would not be over in time for the party. I placed five drops of thieves into my diffuser a few times a day for about twenty minutes at the beginning of the week and placed a few drops with some coconut oil to the bottoms of my feet and hoped for the best. It didn’t clear my cold right away, but within a couple days I noticed a difference. Our colds were going away much faster than normal. Instead of our normal week-long sickness, we were over it in about three days. The party was able to go on and was a great success.

Flu

How Does Thieves Work?

Thieves works to kill bacteria. Research has shown that diffusing thieves for just 12 minutes can clear the air of 90-99.99% of cold and flu bacteria. That is beyond amazing to me. While it isn’t 100% effective for clearing colds, it helps immensely to ward away bacteria and gives us less colds with a faster recovery time on the ones we do get.

Uses for Thieves

Relieves cold and flu- Diffuse to clear the air of bacteria. Add to your laundry soap to get rid of bacteria on clothes.

Soothes sore throats- Add a few drops to honey or gargle with water

Cleans counter tops and other bacteria infested surfaces- Mix with water in a spray bottle and use like any other cleaner

Relieves and cleans sore gums and teeth- Use with oil pulling or place a drop on your toothpaste when you brush

Helps with minor headaches- Use with a carrier oil and rub on the back of your neck and on your forehead

How quickly do you get over colds using thieves? Tell me in the comments section below.

Early Mornings with Peppermint

Early Mornings with Peppermint

I consider myself to be what I call a “part-time-stay-at-home” mom. On my stay-at-home mom days, my little one allows me to sleep in until around seven. However, on the one to four days a week that I do work, there are many days that I have to arrive to work at 4:45 in the morning. That means I have to get up around 3:00 a.m. in order to have enough time to eat, get ready, pump, and drive my little one to whomever is watching her.

That’s right. I am a barista. I get up super early every morning so that I can make your day a little brighter and I absolutely love it.

coffee

As you mommas and daddies know, getting up at 3:00 a.m. is really hard because you still have to get up three times or more a night with your child. They don’t care that you are going to get almost no sleep that night. You can’t really go to bed too early either, because there are tasks like dishes, laundry, and toys to pick up.

This may come as shock to many of you, but I actually cannot stand the smell or taste of coffee. I love making and serving it, but I cannot stand coffee. Weird, I know. I don’t drink any other form of caffeine either. I go to bed after chores are done around 10 or 11 p.m. and wake up at 3 a.m. without any caffeine assistance. Crazy, right? Before being introduced to essential oils, I was able to function ok with this routine, but I wasn’t really all the way there. By the end of the day, I was dead.

Since being introduced to essential oils, I feel so much better about waking up early. I can last all day without feeling like a complete zombie. My oil of choice is peppermint. I massage a few drops onto the back of my neck and under my nose and on my wrists and it wakes me up right away. Plus, I love the smell of peppermint. Since I have a little bit of a stuffy nose, it helped clear that up too. By a little bit of a stuffy nose, I mean I wasn’t able to breathe out of my nose at all when I woke up. Not only did peppermint help me feel more awake, it also helped clear my poor blocked sinuses.

Uses of Peppermint

Wake-me-up

Stuffed sinus & allergy reliever

Reduces cravings and hunger

Wards away bugs (Purification is great for that too)

Helps with itching

ADHD helper

Ways to Use Peppermint

Apply some to your wrists, neck, and behind your ears to help become more alert and awake or to help with congestion and allergies

Add a few drops to water to keep hunger away

Add to your coffee for an extra boost of energy on top of the caffeine

Mix with a carrier oil and rub onto hurt joint area for relief

Diffuse to help you wake up

Add to food like brownies- Yum!

Aromatherapy and Your Diffuser

Aromatherapy and Your Diffuser

Aromatherapy is one of the most used and popular forms of therapy and has been around for thousands of years.

Today I want to talk about the Young Living diffusers. When I first got mine, I was a little confused on how it all worked and how I should actually use it. With more research and a little at home exploring with my diffuser and oils, I found what I needed.

First we will talk about the basics.

Two Basic Types of Diffusers

Dew Drop Diffuser- This is the diffuser that came in my kit. It retails for $154, which is more expensive than the kit itself. That’s a great deal, but as this was a promotional deal, it usually does not come with the premium starter kit. The home diffuser that retails at $98 is the one that normally comes in the kit, but we will get there in a minute. The Dew Drop is super simple to use. It starts with the push of a button and has a blue night light option. It shuts off after four hours, plus it also works as a humidifier.

diffuser

Home Diffuser- This is what most people will see in their premium starter kits. Since it retails for $98 and the starter kit is only $150 and also includes 11 different oils and 24% off any future purchases, I recommend purchasing the whole kit instead of just the diffuser. Here is more information on that. It has a rose-like design with LED light features as well and also works as a humidifier. It can be run continuously or intermittently.

There are other diffusers, including the Aria Ultrasonic, Bamboo, Aromalux Atomizing, and the Rainstone Ultrasonic. They all disperse oils into the air in different ways. I am going to focus on the main two for now, just so we can get the feel of diffusers and how to use them without bringing in more complicated matters.

Travel/Work Diffusers

There are some places that aren’t ideal for bringing a big diffuser, and thankfully, Young Living has made smaller diffusers to ensure we aren’t without our precious diffusers all together.

Traveling Fan Diffuser- This is a small diffuser that can be plugged in or run on batteries. It’s very portable and disperses oils and cold air through an oil pad.

USB Diffuser- These are super portable! Just like any other USB drive, these sticks can be plugged into your desktop or laptop. These are great for the office and will disperse oils in 10, 30, and 60 second intervals. You simply fill the oil cartridge and plug it into a USB port. Super simple!

Using Your Diffuser

My favorite way to use essential oils is through my diffuser. I love that not only do they make my house smell good, they also make my air feel cleaner and give me the emotional and physical advantages of using the oils. With the Home and Dew Drop diffusers, you simply add 5-8 drops of oil and water filled to the line provided for you. I personally use tap water for my Dew Drop diffuser, as that was what was recommended in my instruction manual. For stronger smelling oils, use less oil. You can even mix oils. Cederwood and lavender, spearmint and orange, joy and lemon, etc. I love peppermint and thieves as well.

What Diffusing Oils Can Do For You

Eliminates odors– Tired of smoke, pet, teenage boy, and mildew odors? Purification is perfect for helping eliminate those odors and replacing them with a nice citrus-y smell. Lemon works well too.

Calms emotions- Joy, Stress Away, and Peace and Calming are great for this.

Kill germs- Thieves is great for this. In ten-twelve minutes, it can help clear your air of nasty flu and other germs. Mix it with peppermint or lemon for an extra boost.

Gives you energy- Some oils can help boost your energy level. Peppermint is a great option for this.

Promotes better sleep- Lavender, cedarwood, Peace and Calming, and Valor are very soothing options that are sure to help you wind down and fall asleep faster.

Wards away bugs– In the summertime, nasty bugs can be warded away by diffusing purification and peppermint.

There are so many ways to use your diffuser, and with time and a little bit of play, you will start to figure out what works best for you and your family.

How Long Can I Run My Diffuser?

This is one question that I had. I had to figure this one out on my own, as I couldn’t find much about it online. It all really depends on what oil you are using. If you look at the back of your specific oil, it will tell you how long to diffuse each one and how often you should diffuse it. Some can only be diffused ten minutes at a time, while some can be diffused for hours. You diffuser should have a timer and shut off after a certain amount of time, depending on which one you have.

Cleaning Your Diffuser

Once you’ve gotten your diffuser, tried oils in it, and fallen in love, you might wonder how you should clean it. In between oils, I recommend getting a warm, soft cloth and wiping our your diffuser. Every week or so, fill your diffuser half way with water and fill the other half with vinegar. Let this diffuse for a few hours, wipe it out, and start diffusing your oils again like normal.

Why Diffuse Young Living

Not all essential oils are the same. Cheaper is NOT better. Using cheap oils can be very harmful to you and your family. I love diffusing Young Living because I know they are so pure. I am comfortable with them being diffused in my house because they are 100% therapeutic grade a not filled with man-made substances.  Young Living oils don’t even have expiration dates because they are so pure that they never expire.

Purification: Smoke, Pet, Shoe, and Mildew Odors be Gone! Natural Bug Repellent Too? Oh, Yes!

Purification: Smoke, Pet, Shoe, and Mildew Odors be Gone! Natural Bug Repellent Too? Oh, Yes!

Purification essential oil from Young Living is an oil blend containing citronella, lemongrass, myrtle, lavender,  rosemary, and tea tree oils. It smells absolutely delightful and it is one of my favorite oils. This oil is so awesome for purifying air and neutralizing odors. Plus, it’s EarthKosher certified!

My boyfriend, one year old daughter, and I moved into our house a few months ago. I noticed some mildew-y smelling areas, such as the closet in our bedroom. Another smell I wasn’t enjoying in our house was the smell of diapers. We depose of them outside, but somehow our house still had a lingering smell of poopy diapers. Not pleasant and super embarrassing when people came over. I researched a little bit to see what oils we could use to help and decided on the Purification blend. It came in the premium starter kit so we had it already. How awesome is that?

How to Use Purification For Odors

Whether your odor problem be mildew, smoke, stinky dog (cat, bunny, turtle, etc), or smelly shoes, here are some ways to use Purification.

Place four or five drops in your diffuser– This is the option we use. I place my diffuser in the room the odors are coming from and the smell is gone in no time. It even knocks out the smell of my boyfriend’s stinky work socks after a ten hour day. Yep.

Place a few drops on a cotton ball and place it in the area that the odor is coming from, or in your vents so that each time the heat or AC kicks in, you get a blast of Purification.

Add a few drops to your laundry if you forget to take it out of the washer for too long. Simply add a few drops to the area your soap goes. Make sure not to place it directly on the clothes, as it could stain them. You can also add a few drops to the dryer sheet. Joy is another great oil for laundry smell.

For shoes, just add a few drops to each one.

Other Purification Uses

Natural bug repellent- Rub a few drops on exposed areas to ward away bugs like mosquitos and ticks. Peppermint, tea tree, and lemon are other great options for this. Make a mist by combining five drops each of lemon and purification, along with a couple ounces of water. This can be used for pets too.

Cleanser for cuts, scrapes, and bug bites- This is a great soothing cleanser for small skin cuts and scrapes, as well as bug bites. Place a drop on the affected area right away and it will help bring relief. Mix with a carrier oil such as coconut oil for really sensitive skin.

Acne- Mix a few drops with coconut oil for a moisturizing acne fighting cream that will help provide smooth, soft skin and fewer blemishes.

Oil Pulling for a Healthier Smile

Oil Pulling for a Healthier Smile

One year ago, my boyfriend was in an accident at work. A piece of pipe was dropped by a co-worker and when the pipe fell, it hit a 2×4 piece of wood. The wood flew up and hit him in the face, knocking his two front teeth up into his skull. By some miracle, the teeth stopped before hitting his brain. He was lucky to be alive, but the result was very messed up teeth. Since the accident, he has had a root canal in one of the front teeth and had to have the other one completely pulled. He now wears a flipper and should soon be getting a permanent replacement screwed into his jaw. His bottom two teeth were pushed back in the accident and seem to be dying, resulting in an unpleasant color. My boyfriend, Justin, is so embarrassed about his teeth. In past years he chewed tobacco for quite some time, also resulting in some coloring issues. Because Justin quit chewing and will soon be getting a permanent replacement tooth, he wants his teeth to be white and healthy looking. We read about oil pulling online and decided to give it a shot.

What is Oil Pulling?

Oil pulling is an ancient form of oral care that is done by swishing around a carrier oil such as coconut, sesame, sunflower, or olive oil, in one’s mouth for a period of time.

Benefits of Oil Pulling

Whitens teeth

Prevents cavities

Clears sinuses

Strengthens teeth, gums, and jaw

Helps clear bad breath

Relieves hangovers (Oh yes, I said hangovers. College buddies, take note)

Relieves some headaches

Helps keep skin clear

Less toxins means less headaches, clearer skin, healthier hair, better breath, and a happier you!

How Do You Oil Pull?

To oil pull, you simply scoop out a few teaspoons of your selected carrier oil and move it around in your mouth for about twenty minutes. We decided on coconut oil because it has the least taste. Because coconut oil is a solid at room temperature, melt it in your mouth before swishing it around. Many people have a hard time with this, as it can make you gag. Make sure your stomach is empty. It’s great to do it before breakfast. Once you’ve swished the oil around in your mouth for twenty minutes, spit it into a trash can. Spitting it into your sink can clog it up. When you are done, swish some salt water around in your mouth and spit it out to remove the toxins that have just been pulled by the oil. Do not swallow at any point during the oil pulling process. Oil pulling pulls out toxins from your mouth that can be very dangerous if swallowed. You may brush your teeth after, but it isn’t necessary. Do this up to three times daily, or two to three times a week until desired results appear. I recommend doing it at least a few weeks every year.

Oil Pulling with Added Essential Oils

Oil pulling can just be done with the carrier oil, but it is very beneficial to add a few drops of essential oils to your carrier oil. If you choose to do so, only use Young Living Oils. These oils are 100% therapeutic grade and can be used orally. Simply add two to three drops of the oil to your spoonful of carrier oil. Not only do these oils make it taste better, they help whiten and detoxify the mouth faster.

What Essential Oils Should I Use for Oil Pulling?

Lemon

Thieves

Grapefruit

Orange

Citrus Fresh

These oils all help fight bacteria and will help whiten your teeth faster.

We have been trying oil pulling for three days and already are loving the results. He says his gums feel fresh and tingly and his teeth aren’t hurting when he chews anymore. Each time we do this, we are noticing that his teeth are getting a little bit whiter too.

If you aren’t getting the results you want right away, don’t give up. This process takes time. Give it a few weeks!

I will post before and after pictures along the way after we do this for a week. Tune in soon to see our final results.

Panic No More, Stress Away to the Rescue

Panic No More, Stress Away to the Rescue

Since my early teen years, I have been getting panic attacks here and there. They would come at random stressful times in my life. If you’ve ever had a panic attack, you know that they are scary. Your mind goes blank, your heart races, you sweat profusely, and you just want to escape. It’s like your body isn’t your own. Sometimes counting to ten and paying attention to your breathing just isn’t enough.

Yesterday, while dealing with some people I wish I didn’t have to deal with via text message (I know, of all ways to communicate, right?), I had my first panic attack in probably a year. I had forgotten how terrible they are. I was alone with my daughter and my heart was racing at approximately 500 billion beats per minute. Ok, I might be exaggerating, but it was pretty bad. I had just put on deodorant about a half hour prior and I had sweat through my shirt in a matter of minutes. I stepped back a little bit and decided to use some Stress Away.

In under a minute after applying a drop of Stress Away to my wrist and rubbing it against my other wrist and breathing in the smell, my heart rate was back to normal. I was able to think clearly and wrap my head around the situation. The oil worked so quickly and like that, my panic attack was over. It was such a wonderful feeling to go from crazy to calm so quickly. I was then able to assess the situation and get a better handle on it.

Stress Away works wonders for me, and my family as well. My enroller in Young Living, my cousin Rosalie, is currently homeschooling seven children. Yes, seven. She uses this oil all the time and it helps keep her sane. If it can do that, it can help anyone!

Oils to Use During an Attack

Rose

Frankincense

Sandalwood

Vetiver

Roman Chamomile

These oils are all calming and can be placed in your diffuser (three to four drops) or added to a carrier oil like coconut oil and massaged onto your back or other parts of your body. I like the wrists because you can bring your wrist up to your nose and sniff when necessary.
